That means the Site Inventory Program must be run on -ALL- VAX VMS systems again. AXP machines are exempted from this (as Digital does not yet have the software for this platform). PLEASE - every time we ask for this, we have sites that don't respond until hounded to death. The software is NOT that difficult to use. Your License Manager requests SUNYDASC from GETSOFTWARE. Copy the software to each machine at your site (don't forget workstations!) that runs VAX VMS. Then breakout the saveset and run a command procedure. That's it! The software built around Digital's (provided by Morrisville) will send two mail messages with reports. The first goes to you - and the second to SCSYS here at the Support Center. The reports are identical. That's all it takes. No pain. No mess. No fuss. So how about it? We can't do it without your help! 2.0 Executive Board meeting February 1st...any concerns? The Common SUNY Support Center's Executive Board will be meeting Tuesday, February 1st. If anybody has any concerns they wish to present to the board, please email them to Paul Voninski (Voninski@ oswego.oswego.edu). 3.0 Oracle Version 6.0.37.3 for VMS in GETSOFTWARE ORACLE Version 6.0.37.3 for VMS is now ready for GETSOFTWARE distribution. ORACLE version 6.0.37.3 and ORACLE7 Release 7.0 will soon also be available on the new Alpha platform. Therefore, all schools will be able to migrate from ORACLE Version 6 to ORACLE7 release 7.0 whether on existing hardware or new hardware. 4.0 Two new positions opening in Support Center Because of the increased workload due to so many new members this past year, the Executive Board has said yes to the hiring of two new people to the Support Center: one in support of the Systems and Communication Division (SCSYS) and the other in support of the Administrative group (SCADM). Two search committees have been formed and we hope to have the positions filled in about six weeks. As soon as SUNY has published the positions, we will publish the job descriptions here along with information on where to send resumes. If you know of anyone who might be interested in the positions, stay tuned for information in a future newsletter on where they can send their resume. 5.0 OpenVMS AXP 3000 system soon to arrive The delivery date of the Support Center's OpenVMS AXP 3000 system which also runs OSF/1 is expected next week. Once the machine is installed, we will work on getting an implementation schedule out. 6.0 Article of interest, "Fellow Travelers on the Info Highway" "Fellow Travelers on the Info Highway", by Tom McNichol, USA Weekend, January 21-23, 1994, pgs. 4-6. If you can get your hands on the USA Weekend magazine, there is interesting article on how people are "firing up their personal computers to cruise in the new online communities--and creating fresh ways to connect." Obviously, the use of the Internet is the main theme of the article but it makes continual points on how widespread the access is as it states "online computer networks are turning America into a global village." If you cannot get a copy of the article, email SCACAD@SNYBSCVA and I will fax a copy to you.
