Submitted by: Mike Notarius2.0 Oracle and the 10,000 Day VMS Patch from Digital In the March 18th, 1997, newsletter, SCSYS published information about a patch from Digital that takes care of a 10,000 day bug. Please see the following URL: http://www.itec.suny.edu/newsletter/newsletter_vc/1997/mar19_97.html#a I have opened a TAR (Technical Assistance Request) with Oracle to find out exactly what this has to do with Oracle software, this was their reply: Below is the official word from our VMS development team about what needs to be done with Oracle AFTER appying the delta-time patch. Keywords: ALPHA;VAX;OPENVMS;ECO;DELTA;TIME;ALPLIBR05_070; VAXLIBR05_070;VAXLIBR06_070 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background of Problem: ---------------------- DIGITAL Engineering has discovered that OpenVMS customers may experience serious application errors beginning on or around 19-MAY-1997 at 00:00 time. A set of Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) are available to resolve this problem. All customers running the affected the versions of OpenVMS MUST install the = appropriate ECO as follows: For OpenVMS Alpha Version 6.1 through Version 7.0: ALPLIBR05_070 For OpenVMS VAX Version 5.5 through Version 7.0: VAXLIBR06_070 Systems running OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.1 and OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1 ARE NOT AFFECTED and do not need to install the ECO. If you are running VAX OpenVMS V5.5-2 and have previously applied the VAXLIBR05_070 ECO, you MUST apply the VAXLIBR06_070 ECO. Failure to do so may result in system crashes under certain circumstances. ************************************************************************* ** FAILURE TO INSTALL THE APPROPRIATE ECO WILL CAUSE OPENVMS TO FAIL ** ************************************************************************* DIGITAL proactively communicated this problem and solution to the OpenVMS user community in February 1997. For more information about these DIGITAL ECOs, please see DIGITAL's OpenVMS Systems Web page at the URL http://www.openvms.digital.com or use DSNLINK's Interactive Text Search using the ECO name as a keyword. Ramifications to ORACLE: ------------------------ What you must do to ORACLE after installing the DIGITAL ECO is dependent on the ORACLE RDBMS release you are running. The following table lists the actions you must take for specific ORACLE RDBMS releases: ORACLE RDBMS Release Action to be taken -------------------- ----------------------------------------------- All ORACLE6 releases Relink ORACLE and all applications that are linked and earlier against ORACLE (e.g. precompiled program, OCI programs, etc.). To relink ORACLE, use ORACLEINS and select NETCONFIG to configure and build (options 2 and 4 from the Software Installation and Upgrade Menu). ORACLE 7.0.x releases Relink ORACLE and all applications that are (7.0.15.4, 7.0.15.6, linked against ORACLE (e.g. precompiled 7.0.16.4, 7.0.16.6, programs, OCI programs, etc.). To relink 7.0.16.6.2) ORACLE, use ORACLEINS and select NETCONFIG to configure and build (options 2 and 4 from the Software Installation and Upgrade Menu). ORACLE 7.1.x releases Relink just NETCONFIG and RDBMS as follows. (7.1.3.2, 7.1.5.2.3, 1) Shutdown all ORACLE instances. 7.1.5.2.4) 2) Remove all ORACLE shareable images (REMORACLE, REMUTILITY). 3) Run ORA_UTIL:ORAUSER.COM to set symbols and define logicals. 4) Run ORA_NETCONFIG:ORA_NETCONFIG_BLD.COM. 5) Run ORA_RDBMS:ORA_RDBMS_BLD.COM. 6) Start up all ORACLE instances. ORACLE 7.3.x releases If running OpenVMS V7.0, upgrade to OpenVMS (7.3.2.2, 7.3.2.3.0, V7.1 if feasible. Else relink just NETCONFIG 7.3.2.3.1) and RDBMS as follows: 1) Shutdown all ORACLE instances. 2) Remove all ORACLE shareable images (REMORACLE, REMUTILITY). 3) Run ORA_UTIL:ORAUSER.COM to set symbols and define logicals. 4) Run ORA_NETCONFIG:ORA_NETCONFIG_BLD.COM. 5) Run ORA_RDBMS:ORA_RDBMS_BLD.COM. 6) Start up all ORACLE instances. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Submitted by: Mike Notarius3.0 10,000 Day Patch Fix If you are running Open VMS Ver 5.5-2 then you will need the 10,000 Day patch fix from GETSOFTWARE VAXLIBR06070. 10,000 Day History: ================== There's a limitation in some of Dec's delta time calculation routines. They can only properly handle delta calcs up to 9999 days from their base date. Day 10,000 is May 19, 1997. It only affects a few system service routines, which affect only a few sets of system services. Unfortunately one of those sets is the DecThreads threading package, which Oracle uses. Dec apparently sent out letters to all VMS customers notifying them of the problem and what to do about it. (There are patches available to fix it.) The Patches are dated March 04, 1997. Most campuses have switched to some form of internet mail. If your campus still relies on BITNET mail and uses SNYBUFAA, it will be necessary for this switch to the internet mail before June 17, 1997, or another BITNET gateway. The gateway which SNYBUFAA is connected, UBVM, will be dropping the server effective July 1997. File transfers for System Administration will still be available to each site that has a link to them. Some sites have switched to FTP transfer from System Administration. Should you be interested in this method please contact Len Steele, steelelf@sysadm.suny.edu, 518-443-5221.
